The British are well armed and aiming at the colonists. These colonists are helpless and running away, and it looks like they are being victimized by the British. The interesting thing about this image is that the setting is quite different from other illustrations of the Boston Massacre. Some colonists are already dead on the floor facing the cold ice. The setting is somewhere up on a hill with snow, signifying that the weather was freezing.
