Life in Present-Day El Salvador

The civil war that ravaged El Salvador for over a decade during the 1980's, has had reverberations that can still be felt today. Violence is still an omnipresent force in El Salvador coupled with crime, poverty and diease and a weak infrastructure, the Salvadoran people continue to suffer at the idle hands of their leaders.

The far-reaching ramifications of the civil war cannot be overstated. The civilians of El Salvador beared the brunt of the consequences during the war, with loss of life, property and freedom. Foreign aide has proven to be inneffective in implementing postive reform and the people continue to suffer as they are exploited by criminal elements and neglected by their government.

Faced with the bleak state of El Salvador, many have chosen to leave the country for the chance of a better life. In the years during the war over 450,000 Salvadorans came into the United States seeking asylum.

Today, many continue to migrate to America in order to escape violence and injustice. Many must pay between five and six thousand dollars for transportation to the US. However, safety is not guarenteed and Salvadorans face many dangers on their journey to America. These migrants must endure gang violence, sexual exploitation, and the elements, and upon arriving in America, they are still are risk of deportation.
